Eflornithine features

Share |

Eflornithine is a suicide inhibitor that inhibits alanine decarboxylase, an enzyme that regulates cell division and specifically catalyzes the first step in polyamine biosynthesis. And therefore can kill trypanosomes.

The effect of Eflornithine on Trypanosoma brucei is found because it can wake up comatose patients, and Eflornithine is therefore called a “resurrection drug”.

The researchers hope to replace the arsenic-containing drug mela sterol with Eflornithine, which is too toxic and has a high mortality rate and cannot be used in pregnant women. However, Eflornithine still has some side effects that can cause diarrhea, abdominal pain and anemia, but the patient is more tolerant of this and does not need to stop taking the drug.
